Research and Action

Our research examines AI and digital technologies in relation to power, political economy, institutions, knowledge, territories, and social life. We combine conceptual and empirical inquiry, technical methods, evidence production, and experimentation to understand technological transformation and engage with it responsibly.

AI, power, and sociotechnical inequalities

unequal access, capacities, ownership, and control.

Coloniality, dependency, and technological sovereignty

concentrated platforms, models, data, and infrastructures; local autonomy and situated appropriation.

AI, knowledge, and epistemic mediation

authority, source visibility, bias, and changes in research and learning.

Algorithmic visibility, information, and democracy

the ordering of information, public debate, pluralism, and accountability.

Data, digital infrastructures, and power

data centres, digital labour, AI supply chains, value extraction, and socioenvironmental impacts.

Sociotechnical design, inclusion, and alternatives

accessible, participatory, and critical methods of design and evaluation.

Digital technologies, communities, and situated knowledges

co-production, local appropriation, and respect for community knowledge.

AI, labour, and social transformation

automation, platforms, skills, working conditions, and institutional alternatives.

Additional fields of application

These directions are envisaged in the founding documents and will develop in line with the network’s capacities and projects. Research directions do not imply that every corresponding project has already been delivered.

  • Digital transformation and AI in SMEs
  • Technology transfer and local capacities
  • Young people, education and the futures of work

Methods and working approaches

Critical interdisciplinary research

We investigate artificial intelligence and digital technologies as sociotechnical configurations shaped by inequalities, power, governance, labor, infrastructure, and technological dependency.

Experimentation and technological alternatives

We research, design, and experiment with alternative, inclusive, feminist, and critical technologies and models, without assuming the neutrality of digital systems.

Mapping and data analysis

We develop methodologies to map technological dynamics, value chains, inequalities, infrastructures, and forms of governance across the region.

Editorial and strategic production

We prepare reports, working papers, policy briefs, and pedagogical materials connecting research, public debate, and decision-making.

Organizational models and cooperative technologies

We explore forms of organization, cooperation, and technological production that prioritize social justice, sustainability, intellectual autonomy, and collective benefit.
